Weekend plans? We've got five fun things to do in McHenry County... indoors and out!

CAFE COMEDY NIGHT 8 p.m. Sept. 28, Stage Left Cafe, 121 Van Buren St., Woodstock. Join in an evening of laughs with headliner Dr. Bill Miller and featured comic Adam Minnick. After growing up in Los Angeles and graduating from UCLA, Miller started performing in comedy clubs while in Northwestern University Medical School and has headlined clubs throughout the country since 1980, with a 15-year hiatus to raise children. Now he's back with a vengeance. Minnick is a comedian, writer, podcaster and producer. He has worked at comedy clubs across the U.S., such as the Improv in Chicago, The Punch Line Philly in Philadelphia and Harvey's Comedy club in Portland, Oregon, as well as abroad in Dublin, Perth and Stockholm. Tickets: $15.
JOHNNY APPLESEED FESTIVAL 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28, downtown Crystal Lake. This all-day event brings families and the community together to celebrate fall. The festival is jam-packed (apple jam, of course) with great activities such as pony rides, wagon rides, pumpkin train, children's games, moonwalk, pie-baking contest, pumpkin bowling, storytelling, clowns, face painting, temporary tattoos, dancing, live music, great food and even Johnny Appleseed himself.
MY METAL HEART 10 to 11:30 p.m. Sept. 28, Sideouts Bar & Eatery, 4018 Roberts Road, Island Lake. Rock with an edge. The most rocking, good-time band of coincidentally bald musicians, intentionally dressed to the nines in black suits, and explosively re-creating the greatest guitar-rock music of the ‘80s.
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 Barrington Hills Park District Riding Center, 301 Bateman Road, Barrington Hills. The village of Barrington Hills is hosting its seventh annual The Hills Are Alive Fall Festival. This free event welcomes fairgoers to enjoy an afternoon of live music, BBQ, sweets, treats, games and attractions for all ages, set in the most beautiful autumnal backdrop that only Mother Nature can provide. Living Horse Museum, an equestrian extravaganza, a traveling interactive zoo and customary fest activities are just some of the events planned this year.
HAYRIDES AT HOFFMAN PARK 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 Hoffman Park, W. Main St., Cary. Experience a fun evening enjoying two great fall activities – a hayride and a campfire under the stars. The duration of the event will be 75 minutes – a 45-minute hayride and about 30 minutes for gathering around a campfire making s’mores with family and friends. When registering, indicate your preferred date and timeslot. Dates run through Oct. 26. If there is inclement weather on the day of your scheduled time, the park district will contact you.
