PLANO – The first Architea gathering will open Farnsworth House’s Year of Edith in Plano. The Mies van der Rohe-designed Farnsworth House will open its 2020 program season by hosting a salon series with presentations focusing on mid-century modern women designers, entertaining, food and flowers.

It kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 26 with an Architea led by Stacy Hand, a scholar of art and design. Women designers were responsible for much of the world’s mid-century furniture, textiles and designed objects, although they did not always get the credit they deserved. Hand will talk about some of the truly great designers, including Ray Eames and Aino Aalto to illuminate their role in bringing a modernist aesthetic to the post-war interior.

Following the presentation, guests will be shuttled to the house where they will enjoy tea and savory bites provided by Belladonna Coffee and Tea of Yorkville, and continued conversation.

A second event, just in time for valentine’s entertaining, begins at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 9. Inspired by mid-century food and flowers, designer Richard Abrahamson of RJA Design will offer a mid-century floral design demonstration in the visitors center.

Guests then move to Farnsworth House for a table settings tutorial, utilizing vintage and contemporary items, alongside savory bites again provided by Belladonna Coffee and Tea.

Tickets for each event cost $40. Farnsworth House is at 14520 River Road in Plano. For information or to purchase tickets, visit
