GENEVA – Vargo’s Dance, at 205 W. State St., Geneva, plans an hour-long Thriller on 38 dance event from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. Oct. 29, and successfully requested Geneva officials to approve a partial closure of North Second Street from Route 38 to the driveway at the parking lot.
Owner Jamie Vargo said this will be the second year of offering a four-minute dance performance of Michael Jackson’s "Thriller," along with pop-up food vendors and food trucks.
“We’re hoping for 200 to 300 people this year,” Vargo said. “We had a little over 150 last year.”
Different this year is that the "Thriller" dance was opened up to everyone, with auditions, Vargo said.
“We held a six-week workshop where anyone could learn it and we just hosted an audition,” Vargo said.
About 30 dancers took the workshop, but not all of them auditioned. In all, 28 dancers auditioned before three independent judges and 20 were chosen to perform.
“We’re having rehearsals to get ready; they’ll be working the next week to polish,” Vargo said. “Last year was a free-for-all. This year, because I wanted to make it bigger and better and a little more legit – that’s why we had the workshop and the auditions.”
Dancers were local as well as from Elgin, West Chicago, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn, she said.
Food trucks will include Gia Mia, Chicago Donut Company and Empanada. And the All Chocolate Kitchen will participate by providing hot chocolate, Vargo said.
The event will double as Vargo’s Dance’s Halloween Party where the regulars will dress in costume and go to the reserved second floor at Old Towne Pub, 201 W. State St., Geneva. Vargo said there is a $15 cover charge to attend the upstairs party.
The rain date for the event is Oct. 31, she said.
